Hurricane Sandy: How You Can Help
Last night, Hurricane Sandy barreled through Charitybuzz’s home on the East coast and left many of our bidders, donors and nonprofit partners without power and facing significant damage. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the storm. We hope you are safe!
For those in our community that would like to help with relief efforts, we recommend donating to or working with the nonprofits listed below.
American Red Cross
Financial donations help the Red Cross provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy. To donate, people can visit www.redcross.org , call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Save The Children
Save the Children’s emergency responders in the U.S. are on high alert to help children and families particularly in areas at high-risk in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and coastal communities in other states. Donate now to the Hurricane Sandy Children in Emergency Fund to support Save the Children’s responses to ongoing and urgent needs as a result of the hurricane and tropical storm at www.SaveTheChildren.org.
AmeriCares
AmeriCares has emergency response teams on stand-by and a mobile clinic ready to be deployed as Hurricane Sandy batters the Northeast. When heavy rains and flooding force residents to be evacuated from their homes, AmeriCares delivers personal care items and bottled water to shelters and food banks assisting displaced families. The aid organization also delivers cleaning supplies to help families in the U.S. cleaning up storm damage, as well as medical aid for evacuees with chronic health problems forced to flee their homes without their prescription medicines. To donate, visit www.AmeriCares.org.
Salvation Army National Corp
The Salvation Army has already begun feeding operations at shelters along the East Coast. Dozens of mobile feeding units (canteens), able to serve thousands of meals, are stocked and ready to deploy into the most heavily impacted areas. If you’d like to donate, please visit us at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769). You can also text the word “STORM” to 80888 to make a $10 donation through your mobile phone; to confirm your gift, respond with the word “Yes.”*
ASPCA
The ASPCA is preparing to assist thousands of animals in the region affected by Hurricane Sandy. Follow the hashtag #SandyPets for breaking information. To donate, visit www.ASPCA.org.
